Examining the Different Types of Access Control Systems

Nov 3, 2021 | Access Control

When you decide you want to add an access control system to your residential or commercial building, it’s important to choose the right type. There are several types of access control systems to choose from. Let’s look at some of the most common options to choose from.

Mobile-Based Access Control Systems

Choosing a mobile-based access control system means you will have a system using smartphones for access. When an employee or building resident shows up, they will use a code or access key on their mobile phone to access the building.

With this type of access control system, it’s also possible to give temporary workers or those needing access to building a temporary code to use. They can use the code directly from a smartphone to deliver packages, perform maintenance, or for any other reason. This type of code will work one time only.

Mobile-based access control uses Bluetooth technology or near-field communication to unlock the door. There’s no reason to worry about a poor cellular connection or a slow Wi-Fi when trying to gain access.

Web-Based Access Control Systems

Another type of access control system is the web-based option. This type of system may also be referred to as a cloud-based access control system. With this type of system, you can view and manage permissions with a few clicks. It’s a low-cost option to give your business an access control system.

Mandatory Access Control or MAC

A strict type of access control system, typically used by the military, MAC systems make it impossible to get into the building or through any door without the system administrator’s permission.

Discretionary Access Control or DAC

The more common type of access control system used today is a DAC system. This type of system allows the business owner to make decisions about access and permissions. Each entry point has an Access Control List making it possible to give access to some and not to others. While all employees may come through the front door, not all employees are granted access to some of the other areas.

IoT-Based Access Control Systems

Another type of access control system is called an IOT-based system or the Internet of Things system. This system is easy to control and connects to the internet to make sure everything can be updated in real-time. It’s a very secure type of system with plenty of advantages for users.

Role-Based Access Control or RBAC

This type of access control system allows you to assign permissions based on the role in the company. For example, assembly line workers may only gain access to the building, their work area, and the break areas. However, the managed may be given access to other locations throughout the building with a role-based access system.

Rule-Based Access Control

While it may also be known as RBAC, it’s not the same as a role-based system. Rule-based systems create rules on top of an Access Control List to ensure workers only get into restricted areas during certain times of the day or days of the week.
